Tom Morris Story

The Legend - Old Tom and Young Tom

Tom Morris Snr 1821-1908

Open Champion 1861 1862 1864 1867

Old Tom Morris was one of the all time golfing legends, winning the Open Championship four times at Prestwick, where all the early championships were played.
After his second win in 1862, he was appointed Professional to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, receiving £50.00 per annum and £20.00 for the upkeep of the Old Course Links.

Tom played a major part in golf course design and had an influence in many of the top golf courses in Scotland and further afield.

Old Tom Morris was almost invincible in match play, when partnered by Alan Robertson, he was never beaten.

Young Tom Morris was the finest golfer of his time. He won the Open Championship Belt outright by winning three times in succession. He won again in 1872 to become the first winner of the Claret Jug, the present day Open Championship trophy.

He died tragically at the age of 24 and to acknowledge his great achievements, Golf societies from all over the country contributed to his Memorial stone.

Old Tom and Young Tom still remain the youngest and oldest winners in the history of the Open Championship to date.
